Today, FMH is still run and operated by these three doctors, but with a lot more help! The clinical team, and administrative team as well as the services provided have expanded over the 20+ years of the clinics existence, but our mandate has remained the same; to provide exemplary, progressive emergency medical services to our patients and community.
FMH Emergency Medical clinic (FMH) is a private emergency medical clinic staffed by Emergency Physicians and designed to treat conditions that have recently started or chronic conditions that have suddenly become worse. The clinic is a level 2 Emergency Centre with five Emergency Physicians. There are no facilities for major surgery or keeping patients overnight.
The clinic has a physician in office from 8 a.m. until 12 a.m. (midnight) every day with the exceptions of special/bank holidays when our hours may vary and a notice placed in the media. Persons can also contact us on those days, to obtain our opening hours as a message would be left on our voicemail.
Please note that we close at midnight, therefore, we receive our last patient at 11:30 p.m.
Who we are?
FMH Emergency Medical Clinic was founded in 1997 by three emergency room doctors, Dr. Frank Bishop, Dr. Michael Wharton and Dr. Harold Watson who initially worked at the islands main hospital and while there, saw the need for a Private Urgent Care Clinic.
Though the main hospital at that time worked well, the wait times could be potentially long based on the number and severity of casualties and there was a definite need for an alternative who could provide care to the ‘not so serious cases’ or cases which did not require in-patient care . At the time, the thought of a private, non-hospital based emergency room (urgent care centre) was unheard of but the doctors persisted and with their combined knowledge and expertise FMH Emergency Medical Clinic was born.
